[May 2007] The IMechE present a number of different prizes every year, awarded for papers published by the Institution or contributions and achievements in the aerospace field. The following prizes and awards were presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Aerospace Industries Division on 15 May 2007.
The Derek George Astridge Safety in Aerospace Award
A shield and medal were presented to Professor Michael McCarthy of the University of Limerick, for his paper, 'Advances in conptational models for crashworthiness and impact behaviour of composite aeronautical structures' which was presented at the seminar 'Design for Impact and Crashworthiness on Aerospace and Automotive Vehicle Structures.'
Kenneth Harris James Prize
Dr Adrian Murphy,Dr Fergal Edward Lynch,Dr Mark Anthony Price and Dr Alan Gibson for their paper ‘Modified stiffened panel analysis methods for laser beam and friction stir welded aircraft panels’, which was published in the Journal of Aerospace Engineering Volume 220 No G4.
Charles Sharpe Beecher Prize
Dr Salman A Ansari, Dr Rafal Zbikowski and Professor Kevin Knowles were awarded with the prize for their paper ‘Non-linear unsteady aerodynamic model for insect-like flapping wings in the hover, part 1: methodology and analysis and part 2, implementation and validation’, which was first published in the Journal of Aerospace Engineering Volume 220 Nos G2 and G3.
William Sweet Smith Prize
The prize was won by Dr. Ing. Daniele Fanteria and Dr. Luisa Boni for their paper ‘Finite-element-based assessment of analytical methods for the design of fuselage frames’, published in the Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Volume 220 No G5.
