Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Survival in the 21st Century

Event Type: Seminar
Date: 12 May 2010
Ever-increasing cost pressures mean that a number of companies have moved their manufacturing operations to countries with lower labour costs. However, it doesn’t have to be this way, not if established world-class methodologies are applied to pharmaceutical plants. This event will offer advice, solutions and best practice to tackle excessive lead times, high inventory, inefficient staffing, poor process control and supply-chain reliability. Benefit from the lessons of best practice, recognise the signs of success and help prevent failure.

It will have significant impact on the medical and biotechnology industries and healthcare technologies in the 21st century. Nanotechnology has wide-ranging applications, such as drug synthesis and delivery, cell surgery and therapy, early disease diagnosis and prevention, biosensors and medical implants. The organising of this event will help to promote IMechE as a leading organisation in the area of emerging technologies.

This event will address the following questions:

1. What is the recent development on Nanotechnology?

2. What are the current medical needs and healthcare needs?

3. What are the existing and future applications of Nanotechnology in Medicine and Healthcare?

4. What are the future needs in medicine and healthcare and what can Nanotechnolgy offer?

Event Type: Seminar
Date: 03 November 2010

Surgical robots find increasing uses as surgeons demand more accuracy but with smaller incisions. First generation robots were large machines based on industrial arms. Numbers of these are still in daily clinical use. Today’s second generation robots are hand-sized. They are bespoke designs for specific tasks. They allow new procedures that are not practicable by hand and eye.

New sensors, real time imaging and miniature mechanisms offer even more uses for surgical robots. Tiny tools under image-guidance can place cochlear implants to treat profound deafness. Snake manipulators can navigate to disease sites within the abdomen without leaving scars. Micro-scale technology is being used to design swimming and crawling robots. These can move freely within body cavities. Examples of all these devices are undergoing laboratory trials.

To achieve global targets for reducing CO2 emissions, carbon abated clean coal technologies (CATs) will be required for retrofit to existing power plant and installation on new build power plant. Improved cycle efficiency and biomass co-firing will reduce CO2 emissions per unit of electricity generated, but to achieve much larger reductions, up to 90%, there will be a need for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
