You are an engineer with an interest in bringing the world of mechanical engineering into the classroom. Insight into Industry exists to bridge the gap between industry and school-age students with an interest in STEM subjects.

Meet an Insight into Industry participant

  • Will Newby

Will introduced his employer to the III scheme where he successfully hosted three local school teachers on a placement at Babcock.

You will open your company’s doors to STEM schoolteachers, who can apply to attend a placement with a relevant local employer to deepen their first-hand experience of mechanical engineering.

A 2014 poll by the Institution indicated that 42% of employers think careers advice/guidance in secondary schools is poor. As an employer, this is your chance to change that statistic directly.

It is a perfect opportunity to build a relationship between mechanical engineering industries and schools in your area. It can open doors to work experience opportunities, possible grants and work schemes.

You will also be able to help teachers and students gain a greater understanding of the diverse range of career options available for young engineers.

This initiative aims to embed teachers in your company for two weeks so they gain a wider understanding of the diverse range of career options available for their students.

Teachers will visit a number of different departments and environments over a one- or two-week period.

Each teacher visit may include:

  • Examples of project work undertaken
  • Discussion around the wider employability skills needed in the workplace
  • Meeting employees from different entry routes (eg graduate, apprentice)
  • Tour of a facility or projects
  • Practical ‘taster’ tasks

The teachers will be asked to evidence their visit with photographs, and make notes on what was discussed and what they have learnt, via an online CPD package as part of their Insight into Industry experience.

Register your interest by email.
