Are you interested in teaming up with teachers in local schools for at least one hour a year to talk to young people about your career and your route into engineering? If this sounds like you then read on.

You are an engineer with an interest in bringing the world of mechanical engineering into the classroom. Inspiring the Future bridges the gap between industry and school-age STEM students by sending professionals to schools to discuss their expertise.

As one of 35,000 volunteers from over 5,000 organisations of all shapes and sizes, you will pledge to give one hour per year to speak to young people about your mechanical engineering career and the educational route you took.

You will work closely with Inspiring the Future’s engagement team, who will help you to embed the initiative’s ideas in your work. You can inspire your employees by getting them involved, enabling the variety needed to have the biggest impact on young people and their career aspirations.

Short careers talks or insights normally take between 20 minutes and an hour, including a Q&A session for students to ask you questions. Schools and FE colleges may also host careers fairs which normally involve 20-30 professionals from different sectors, with students moving round in a ‘marketplace’ set-up; these normally last about an hour.

You will connect with schools securely online, and receive invites from local schools and colleges to see if you can attend STEM-related events during the academic year.
