Overview

Engineers are at the forefront of enabling the challenging and exciting carbon capture, transmission, sequestration and storage technologies. Increasing numbers of engineers will be involved in this field and therefore an understanding of the technology will form an important cornerstone of any engineer working in process and power industries.

The closure by 2015 of the UK’s coal fired power stations that have opted out of the EU Large Combustion Plants Directive, along with the need to maintain secure and diverse sources of electricity generation as the UK’s nuclear power plants come to the end of their operating lives has led to renewed interest in coal fired plant. All new coal fired plants are required to be carbon capture ready. However, there is little experience of carbon capture at the scale needed for utility power station.

Carbon Capture and Storage is the most exciting proposition for reducing emissions and tackling climate change across a broad range of industries. Institution members throughout the world are working on challenging R&D projects to bring the technology into commercial reality. In order for the technology to develop engineers need to take the lead in ensuring the public accept this emerging technology by addressing key issues with carbon dioxide capture, transmission and sub surface sequestration.

The aim of this seminar is to explore the technologies available to design power plants for carbon capture, the technologies for the capture process itself and the provisions will allow carbon capture to be installed at a later date, transportation options for carbon dioxide and the technology and options for storage of carbon dioxide.

The seminar will provide engineers with an appreciation of the latest developments and technology associated with carbon capture and storage as well as areas where further development is required.
