Getting Involved

The Institution has developed and launched an Ambassadors Scheme which includes opportunities for members to get involved in our education activities.

Find out more about the Ambassadors Scheme by clicking here.

A new qualification, the Engineering Diploma, is being introduced into schools and colleges for students aged between 14 and 19 years with effect from September 2008.  More information about the Engineering Diploma is available here.

Effective delivery of the Diploma will depend very significantly on support from employers in several ways; from visits to employers and work experience to using real project briefs and visits from industry.  The Institution is planning to contribute in a number of ways to the success of the Engineering Diploma and we need members, as Ambassadors, to engage in this in the coming year.  In the short term, however, there is a specific project with which you can help.

Mathematics for engineering

A Mathematics Coordinator is working with the Royal Academy of Engineering using input from practicing engineers to develop engineering exemplars for a new module, “Mathematics for Engineers”, that will be available as part of the Engineering Diploma.  The Institution is recommending that students who want to study engineering at university take this module as part of their Diploma studies.

The exemplars are being developed to support teachers who will deliver the Engineering Diploma at schools and colleges from September 2008. They are intended to be case-studies illustrating real engineering applications.

The input needed from engineers consists of a short statement illustrating real-life problems that could be solved using the mathematics involved in “Mathematics for Engineers”.
