Education Theme Summary

Early in 2007 the IMechE Trustees created 4 Key Themes around which the Institution’s activities will increasingly converge; Energy, Environment, Transport and Education.  These themes provide a way to focus on issues that are important to both engineers and the wider public and allow us to demonstrate the key role that engineers play in society by making a major contribution to our health, wealth and security.

We will only realise the Institution’s Vision if we have sufficient appropriately educated and trained engineers.  The Key Message for the Education Theme is, therefore:

“Inspiring, preparing and supporting tomorrow’s engineers to respond to society’s challenges”

Consequently, IMechE will:

  • identify the factors that contribute to people choosing an engineering career and, use this information to help inspire more people to become professional engineers;
  • contribute to the development of mechanical engineers who have the required levels and areas of awareness, knowledge, understanding and skills to be competent professional engineers; and support and encourage continuing professional development (CPD) for mechanical engineers.

The Institution will undertake a range of activities to support our aims, including:

  • support a range of initiatives that promote engineering in schools;
  • support the introduction and delivery  of the 14-19 Diplomas in Engineering Studies;
  • accredit engineering degrees;
  • promote Sustainable Development in engineering education;
  • accredit employers professional development programmes (for EngTech, IEng and CEng);
  • support members’ CPD and wider career development; and
  • promote the profession.

The Institution will engage with partners, communicate on key issues and create change.

In pursuing its Education Key Theme, IMechE will:

  • identify real issues based on sound data;
  • be broad in interest but focussed on delivery;
  • work with partners and promote partnerships whenever possible;
  • seek to add real value; and promote engineering, the Institution and its members.
