What is the YMB?
It is IMechE’s national board for Young Members.
Vision
To ensure that the voices of IMechE Young Members who are the future for Mechanical Engineering, is heard, listened to and acted upon.
Mission
To offer value to Young Members by supporting, developing and promoting knowledge, understanding and professionalism.
What Does the YMB Do?
Provides a medium for Young Members to represent Young Members.
- Reviews issues affecting the profession
- Provides a communication channel for Young Members
- Holds training days and designs resource material for Young Members
- Liaises with other Institutions’ young members (UK and world-wide)
- Promotes Professional Development
- Lobbies for change
- Supports the regional Young Member Network

YMB Trustee Board Representative - Tom Slatter

Tom graduated from the the University of Sheffield in 2004 with an MEng in Mechanical Engineering. During this time he worked for Ford in Powertrain CAE and in Diesel Engine Engineering. His PhD was sponsored by the Ford Advanced Research & Materials Group in Aachen, Germany and concerns valve recession in automotive engines.
He also has research interests in other automotive tribological systems, the tribological properties of cryogenically processed materials, the tribology of
manufacturing and large industrial systems.
In 2007, Tom became an University Teaching Associate to teach Mechanical
Engineering Design and Manufacturing to undergraduates. He is also a member
of the IMechE Trustee Board, Young Members' Board and the Tribology Group
Committee.
