Whitworth scholarships came into being because of the foresight, passion and steely determination of one man.
In 1868, Sir Joseph Whitworth, one of history’s most famous engineers and himself an apprentice, left a legacy to found engineering scholarships to assist technicians and apprentices wishing to pursue an academic engineering degree.
As Trustee of this legacy, IMechE offers a number of awards per year from the Whitworth Scholarship Trust as well as senior scholarships which will support students throughout their degree programme.
Whitworth Scholarships are awarded to the brightest and most tenacious apprentices. To pursue an award, applicants must have spent a minimum of two years as an apprentice and possess excellent academic abilities, as well as the personal qualities that will enable scholars to succeed in industry.
In return scholars receive £4,500 each year of full time study on a MEng or MSc course in any engineering discipline. On successful completion of the degree, each award holder is entitled to use the title "Whitworth Scholar" with the designatory letters WhSch.
As you would expect of such a prestigious scheme, these young engineers often develop into real high flyers. Did you know that 13 Whitworth Scholars have gone on to become Presidents of IMechE? And, since 1984, 50% of Whitworth Scholars gained 1st class honours engineering degrees!
Joseph Whitworth had a Vision; to one day help young engineering apprentices from all walks of life, by offering them an opportunity to better their minds and career with education.
