About the Awards

Welcome to the Vision Awards 2009

Keith H Millard

At the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, we realise that one of the biggest challenges ahead is about society’s mindset about what engineering is. Engineering is not just a machine, a branch of technology, or an equation to be solved – engineering is about the people who are making change. The Vision Awards exists to showcase talented people who are inspiring change and driving innovation forward.

The awards underpin our Vision, to improve the world through engineering by inspiring, preparing and supporting tomorrow’s engineers to respond to society’s challenges. They unite three very important and unique types of people who are doing just that: Engineering Technicians, Undergraduates and Whitworth Award holders. They possess talent, leadership skills, motivation and a desire to impart their knowledge and expertise to the next generation.

At a time when there is continued debate about how to raise the profile of science and engineering to curb the skills shortage and motivate young talent, we may ask ourselves whether the onus is on media, Government or industry to create change. I believe that we all have a duty to raise the profile of this great profession if we are to attract the inspirational young talent who will be the owners of its future.

Engineers are the pioneers of modern civilisation. As you learn the stories of our 2009 Visionaries, I hope you will be inspired to join us in supporting them and what they stand for.

A Vision can change the world.
A Visionary can make it happen.
