Improving the world through engineering
There is little doubt about the scale or complexity of the challenges we’re to face in the coming decades: accelerating climate change and spiralling energy consumption; mass urban migration and ever growing transport demand; rampant environmental degradation and many more mouths to feed.
Daunting as these issues are, there is one group of people uniquely equipped to help us meet the challenges ahead: engineers.
Mechanical engineering in action
Engineering is something of a hidden success story in the UK. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is looking to grow awareness of the sector - taking a positive, inspiring message into schools and out to the media. To help communicate this vision we have produced this short video to highlight the work of some of our 78,000 members.
The four key themes of mechanical engineering
Creative, ingenious, dynamic - engineers apply science and imagination to shape the world around us: our cities, housing, food, transport, information, medicine, entertainment and even our clothing are all products of engineering. Almost every aspect of the UK economy is underpinned by engineering together with science and technology.
We have a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead, along with a vision for the future. We're communicating this through our key themes, which reflect the issues most relevant to society and our members: energy, environment, transport and education.
