President's review

Professor William M Banks, the 2008/09 President gives us his perspective on the year which saw some significant changes for the Institution. In 2008 we strived to fulfil many of the actions agreed in the previous year. We have made great strides towards updating the Institution, increasing its profile, reaching out to more of our membership and engaging better with both engineering companies and academia. Learned society

With a focus on the energy, environment, transport and education theses, 2008 saw an increase in the scope and relevance of our commercial events programme. Our flagship events the Manufacturing Excellence Awards and Formula Student also continued to go from strength to strength. Read more.

Membership and professional development

In a successful year for the Institution we again registered more Chartered Engineers than any other awarding body. 2008 also saw the launch of a new membership scheme for pupils on the Engineering Diploma, which will provide a useful educational tool for teachers and students alike. Read more.

Near you - UK and Ireland

In 2008 the Regional network delivered key support and services to engage members and raise the profile of the Institution and the engineering profession. Having embraced the new regional business plan, each region has been able to tailor it to meet the needs and interests of their local membership. Read more.

Near you - International

Working from the International strategy we took up the challenge to grow the Institution in both profile and membership during 2008. We also launched a branch in India and embarked on an ambitious project to identify companies and places of learning where valuable mutual relationships can be developed. Read more.

Young members

The Young Members Board has been working to establish itself as a support hub for the Young Members network. By developing tools that enable panels to engage with Young Members in their area we hope to provide a platform for voicing opinions and rewarding and recognising active members for their contribution to the profession. Marketing and communications

We continue to work to raise awareness of and promote both the Institution and the engineering profession to government, industry and the wider public. Most importantly a new brand and visual identity was developed in 2008 following thorough research and consultation with members and key audiences. Read more.

Scholarships and awards

The first ever Vision Awards were held in October. These awards were created to unite Engineering Technicians, Undergraduates, and Whitworth Award holder. Three young Visionaries were also chosen and recognised for their academic ability, technical skill, and exceptional dedication to their chosen profession. Read more.

Professional Engineering Publishing

PE magazine consolidated and strengthened its position as the leading engineering magazine, while our journals also proved to be buoyant on all fronts with the successful launch of the Journal of Sports Engineering Technology. Read more.

Financial review

The Institution has been affected by the current economic climate in a number of ways but is committed to maintaining financial prudence and in particular ensuring a positive income stream from activities during these turbulent times. Read more.
