IMechE are delighted to be partnering with Greenpower as the headline sponsor for the 2008 IMechE Greenpower competition.
The Institution has teamed up with Greenpower, which runs the schools electric car competition, in a bold move to stimulate the interest of young people in engineering. The event is a natural fit for the IMechE vision of inspiring the next generation of engineers. As an event it also fits naturally with Formula Student, the IMechE competition for students to design and build a racing car.
Schools either design and build their own cars or use customised kits to compete in regional endurance heats using standard motors and batteries. The final race at Goodwood lasts 4 hours and is an exciting event with up to 100 finalists competing.
As part of our partnership with Greenpower, the Institution has launched a scheme to enable IMechE members to act as mentors and help primary or secondary schools to enter the competition. Encouraging the children and passing on your engineering knowledge should be rewarding as well as fun and limited funds are available to assist. The scheme is managed by a small committee of IMechE members. An application form to assist a school is available here.
If you are an ImechE member and want to get involved by helping a school to build and enter a car in IMechE Greenpower or by acting as a Marshal or Scrutineer at an event then please email greenpower@imeche.org for further details.
